The Ultimate Family Camping Checklist
There is nothing quite like arriving at a campsite and realising you have left something critical at home.
The torch. The mallet. The tin opener. It happens to almost everyone at least once, and it is completely avoidable with a decent family camping checklist.
The Complete Family Camping Checklist
I have refined our family camping checklist over years of trips, and it has saved us from disaster more times than I can count.
Use this as your starting point and adapt it to suit your family.
Family Camping Checklist UK: Everything You Need to Pack
Whether you’re heading to the Lake District or a local field, this family camping checklist for UK trips covers everything from shelter to snacks.
Shelter and Sleeping
Everything you need for a comfortable night. Tent, and check all poles and pegs are packed before you leave. Mallet for tent pegs. Spare tent pegs. Sleeping bags for everyone, rated for the temperature. Sleeping mats or self-inflating pads. Pillows or pillow cases to fill with a fleece.
A groundsheet if your tent does not have a sewn-in floor.
Tip: Lay the tent out and check it over before every trip. A missing pole or a broken zip is much easier to deal with at home than on site.
- ✅Tent -including poles & pegs (plus spares)
- ✅Mallet
- ✅Sleeping bags, quilts & blankets
- ✅Pillows
- ✅Sleeping mats or inflatable beds
- ✅Groundsheet, if needed
Clothing
The key to comfortable camping is layers. Pack more than you think you need, especially for the evenings.
Base layers for everyone, fleeces or mid-layers, waterproof jacket and trousers for all, a warm hat and gloves even in summer for UK camping, t-shirts and shorts for warm days, comfortable trousers or jeans, at least two pairs of socks per day, wellies or walking boots, sandals or crocs for around the campsite, pyjamas and a dressing gown for morning trips to the toilet block, and a spare set of clothes for each day plus one extra set per child.
- ✅Underwear
- ✅Socks & extra socks
- ✅Shorts and/or trousers
- ✅T shirts
- ✅Jumpers, hoodies, fleece jackets – even in summer, needed for early/late
- ✅Waterproof coat
- ✅Hat (woolly or sun)
- ✅One extra set of clothing for everyone, just incase
- ✅Sleeping – pyjamas plus a dressing gown/fleeced hoodie
- ✅Footwear – depending on the trip, crocs, trainers, flip flops, walking boots
Space is at a premium when packing for a trip, but that extra coat, jacket or hoodie could be a life saver at some point!
Kitchen and Cooking
There’s nothing worse than forgetting your cooking equipment or fuel, it begins the weekend in the worst possible way.
Camp stove and fuel, check fuel levels before you leave. Lighter or matches. A large pan, a small pan, and a frying pan covers most meals.
Kettle or pot for boiling water. Plates, bowls, cups, and mugs for everyone. Cutlery, serving spoon, and spatula. Sharp knife and chopping board. Tin opener and bottle opener.
Washing up bowl, sponge, and washing up liquid. A small drying rack or tea towels. Cool box and ice packs. Food storage containers and zip-lock bags. Cling film and foil. A roll of bin bags.
